Two players locally, four players online

For four friends, the announced route is online co-op. The four-character roster does not create a four-way local split-screen option. Xbox’s wording restricts two-player split-screen to console; it should not be advertised as a PC feature simply because the PC version supports co-op.[1]

Not established in reviewed sources

Can two local players join two friends online?

The reviewed announcements give separate local and online player limits, but do not clearly describe mixed local-plus-online campaign sessions. Treat that specific arrangement as unconfirmed until an applicable official setup guide establishes it.[1][2]

Who can each player choose?

Co-op offers Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes from the start. Mags is a former Gear working at the Imulsion Refinery; Lucas is a cadet and communications officer. Elizabeth Ludlow and Jake Ryan Lozano join returning actors John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro in those roles.[2]

August 2026 campaign preview

In the August campaign hands-on build, solo play controls Marcus with AI squadmates; the four-character choice appears in the co-op lobby. The AI teammates can help in combat and revive the player. The June reveal’s broad roster announcement should therefore not be read as a verified solo character selector.[2][3]

These are the campaign’s characters. They should not be confused with the Assault, Breacher, Marksman and Medic classes in Horde Siege. A four-person squad appears in both systems, but character selection and class selection answer different questions.[2][4]

How much of the story is known?

The campaign follows three days in Kalona. The September 9 achievement list identifies Acts 1 through 5 and separately lists completing the campaign in co-op, secondary objectives and collectibles. This supports a five-act structure without revealing a reliable completion time or a complete chapter route.[2][5]

Reading the evidence

A three-day story span is an in-world interval, not three days of required playtime. The August preview only covers the first two chapters of Act 2, so its pace should not be multiplied into a promised campaign length.[3]

Crossplay and Steam account linking

August 2026 beta · historical

During the August multiplayer beta, Steam players could play without linking a Microsoft account, but cross-platform squad invitations required account linking. The published route was the main menu’s Social pane, then Link Account. That is a dated beta instruction, not proof that every launch campaign option or account requirement is identical.[6]

Reading the evidence

Cross-platform invitations, local split-screen and owning the game on multiple platforms are separate features. The beta demonstrates an invitation mechanism; it does not establish mixed couch-and-online campaign support. Check the launch co-op instructions before buying around that particular setup.[1][6]
