An event, and the title of a game

‘Emergence Day’ names the event when the Locust erupt from beneath Sera and begin their invasion. ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ is the game returning to that event. The distinction matters because older games refer back to Emergence Day even when their campaigns take place much later.[1][2]

Where E-Day fits in the timeline

Series background
Story chronology — intervals, not a calendar map[1][2][3][4]
  1. Before E-Day

    Pendulum Wars end

The human war lasts 79 years. The peace before Emergence Day lasts six weeks.

  2. The opening days

    Gears of War: E-Day

The invasion begins. Marcus and Dom’s campaign follows three days in Kalona.

  3. Early aftermath

    Gears of War: Judgment

Baird and Kilo Squad’s story occupies the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. This source does not pin it to an exact day.

  4. 14 years after E-Day

    Gears of War

The original campaign begins much further into the Locust War.

The six-week interval in the historical Xbox primer describes the peace before the invasion. Judgment belongs to the early aftermath of the invasion; the source cited for it does not establish an exact day. Keep those two intervals separate when comparing timelines.[2][4]

Why the earlier war matters

The long Pendulum Wars explain why Marcus and Dom are experienced soldiers before the Locust arrive. The short peace explains the shock of the invasion: a population beginning to imagine life after war is confronted by a threat from below. E-Day’s opening armistice setting makes that transition part of the story rather than distant exposition.[2][3]

Their shared military experience also carries a personal loss. Carlos Santiago’s death affects Marcus and Dom differently, and their friendship is still changing when the new war begins.[3]

Does E-Day retcon Judgment?

The two games focus on different squads: Marcus and Dom in E-Day, Baird and Kilo Squad in Judgment. Sharing the early Locust War setting is not itself a contradiction. The sources cited here do not announce that Judgment has been erased or replaced.[3][4]

There is, however, a specific acknowledged timeline adaptation: the developers discuss moving the chainsaw-inspiration incident from the books into E-Day. The Lancer origin section explains that example. It is more precise to identify a documented change than to label all continuity either untouched or discarded.[5]

Which game should I play first?

Reading the evidence

Do I need the original trilogy to understand the premise?

You only need the starting situation: the human war has ended, the Locust invade, and Marcus and Dom are survivors learning to depend on one another. Playing in release order gives you the older games’ perspective first; starting with E-Day follows this earlier point in the story. That is a reading-order choice, not a requirement to complete another game.[1][3]
