Keep the burst on the target

The Coalition explicitly returns to the original game's six-round burst. The useful unit of fire is a burst, rather than the Prototype Lancer's sustained stream of bullets.[1]

Practice keeping the reticle on an enemy through the whole burst, then reset your aim before the next one. If a target ducks behind cover, spend the pause checking the next firing angle instead of continuing to shoot at the wall.

Burst fire or sustained fire?[1]
RifleConfirmed distinction
HammerburstAccurate six-round bursts; Perfect Active Reload increases firing rate.
Prototype LancerHigher firing rate and a larger magazine than recent Lancers.
Lancer MK1 / RetroStrong recoil; especially dangerous at close range.

Perfect reload changes the rhythm

A practice loop for the Hammerburst[1]
  1. Aim

    Track one burst

Keep the target in view as the six rounds leave the rifle.

  2. Reload

    Hit the perfect window

The confirmed Hammerburst bonus is an increased rate of fire.

  3. Continue

    Relearn the faster cadence

Maintain accuracy as the firing rhythm changes.

Do not confuse that weapon-specific rate-of-fire effect with a promise of an extra damage bonus. The announcement identifies the faster firing rate; the separate launch notes raise base damage after the beta.[1][2]

Use launch behavior when comparing weapons

The September 30 multiplayer tuning notes increase Hammerburst damage. They do not state a final damage number, headshot multiplier, magazine capacity or time to kill, so a precise stat comparison needs measured evidence from the current build.[2]

Try its burst cadence in Combat Training before judging it against the Lancer. In Horde, weapon mods and class bonuses change the conditions; Versus disables weapon mods.[3]
